Screed or levelling compound?
A screed builds up a floor to level, typically 25 mm deep or more. A self-levelling compound smooths an existing floor that is already broadly at the right height. Many of the flatness problems we are called to are best fixed with a properly prepared base and a few millimetres of compound, rather than a new screed.
Preparation decides the result
Levelling compounds bond to what is underneath, so any dust, laitance, paint, adhesive or weak surface has to go first. We grind or clean the floor, repair cracks, prime it to suit the compound and the substrate, then pour and spread it to the required thickness.
